As flawed as it was I do sometimes really miss that early 2010s era of online feminism where it felt like awesome and powerful to be a feminist, especially as a young + newly politically aware woman, bc it meant you were taking part in a long history of pathbreaking activism and art. Learning about feminist history in that context felt like opening a hidden door to a new sense of strength, self-reliance, and inspiration. I still remember the first time I saw that photo of audre lorde where she’s standing in front of a chalkboard and on it she’s written “Women are powerful and dangerous.” Wow! I’d never thought of myself as powerful or dangerous before but it was impactful beyond words to like have that become a part of my sense of self as a teenage girl. Just to know that women were out there in the world - had BEEN out there in the world - who were completely busting out of the little tiny box society had built for them… Now I feel like the dominant attitude towards being a woman online is like “yeah yeah the little tiny box sucks we all know that. so how do we make it prettier/more comfortable” which is just so depressing…

It’s crazy how people openly use surveillance and cameras against people to trade in for any little scrap of social currency. like why does a girl reading on a bus need to be recorded and reported just so a tiktoker can get more followers. why does a random woman need to be polite in her nonconsensual tiktok street interview. I’m sick of it
